What Is Medicare Part B Coverage?

Medicare Part B is medical insurance. Together, Medicare Parts A and B are known as Original Medicare.

Medicare Part B helps cover medically necessary services and supplies used to diagnose or treat a health condition. This can include care received at a doctor’s office, outpatient hospital department, clinic, or other health facility.

Preventive Care:

Part B also helps cover many preventive services designed to help prevent illness or detect health concerns early, such as screenings, flu shots, and other Medicare-covered preventive care.

You will generally pay both a monthly premium and a yearly deductible for Medicare Part B. In 2026, the standard Part B monthly premium is $202.90, and the annual Part B deductible is $283. Your premium may be higher if your income is above certain limits based on your tax return from two years ago.

If any of the following applies to you, you will generally pay $202.90 for your Part B premium in 2026:

  • You are not receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits.
  • You are billed directly for your Part B premium.
  • You have both Medicare and Medicaid coverage, and Medicaid pays for your monthly premiums.

If your yearly income in 2024 was above certain limits, you may pay a higher Medicare Part B premium in 2026.

After your deductible is met, you typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for covered Part B services. Some outpatient services may also include copayments or coinsurance.

Enrollment Penalty

If you don't enroll in Medicare Part B when you're first eligible, you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty, which increases your monthly premium. This penalty may not apply if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).

Once your deductible is met, you typically pay:
